Summary: Can PS3 play MKV videos? Here is a step by step guide on how to play various MKV files on PS3 (PlayStation 3) with ease.
"I was never a huge fan of the MKV format since it was not as popular as a AVI or a MPEG file formats. However the MKV file has a huge advantage over all other formats that I really like. But now, the problem is that my PS3 can not support MKV videos directly. Do you have any suggestion?"
The PS3 is certified for playback of the .divx format and also supports H.264 in a MP4 container, but it cannot decode MKV itself. To get the file playing on PS3, these are two options for you:
One: Stream the MKV from your computer using DivX Media Server. It has been added the ability to stream .mkv files to the PS3 from the "Stream" function in DivX Plus Player on your computer.
If the above option is much complex to you, then the second option is right here for you.
Two: Convert the file to a format supported natively by the PS3, e.g. DivX HD 720p/1080p or MP4.
Brorsoft Video Converter can help you encode MKV videos into MP4 for PS3 effortlessly. Furthermore, this powerful program can deal with various common video formats including MTS, MXF, MOV, AVI, WMV, TiVo to iPhone, Apple TV, iTunes, etc. iDevices supported MP4/MOV/M4V for playing anywhere you like. If you are a Mac user, the equivalent Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac will be your ideal app. Now download the software on computer and follow the guide below to start MKV to PS3 conversion.

Summary: Looking for a simple Canon XF300/XF305 MXF to Pinnacle Studio workflow? This article will discuss how to edit Canon XF300/XF305 MXF videos in Pinnacle Studio.
The XF305 and XF300 camcorders are a landmark addition to Canon's professional High Definition camcorder range. The new Full HD 50Mbps MPEG-2 4:2:2 codec brings broadcast-quality HD video within reach of all professional filmmakers. The issue users encountered is that Canon XF300/XF305 MXF videos can not be accepted by Pinnacle well.
"Sooooo... MXF can not be directly supported by Pinnacle Studio? I wanna transfer Canon XF300 MXF videos to Pinnacle 17 for editing. However, I got nothing but some error messages. Any tips on this workflow?"
Although, it claims that Pinnacle Studio can support MXF files, there are so many limits you are facing like the System Requirements: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.66 gHz or higher required for MXF editing, 2GB system memory required for MXF and more. If you can't meet these requirements, you will get troubles when importing .mxf files to Pinnacle Studio for editing. To make Pinnacle Studio work with Canon XF300/XF305 MXF footage beautifully, the best solution is to transcode MXF to Pinnacle Studio favorable formats like AVI, WMV, etc with a powerful third party program.
What I used is Brorsoft Video Converter which is fully capable of dealing with MXF videos from Canon XF300/XF305, P2 card or Sony camcorder. Besides MXF, it also can handle other video formats including XAVC, H.265, MTS, MP4, MOV, MKV .etc. With it, you also can effortlessly encode/re-encode video footage for smoothly importing and editing in various non-linear editing systems (NLE), including Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas, Cyberlink PowerDirector, Avid Studio, Windows Movie Maker and more. Now, download the software online and follow the guide below to start conversion.

There are two ways to import Canon XF100 MXF files into Premiere Pro CS5/CS6/CC for further editing. One is using Canon XF Ultility, another is using a MXF Converter. Keep reading for each process.
Canon XF100 HD camcorder
Canon XF100 (XF-100) Professional Camcorder - MPEG-2 Full HD recording codec, 50Mbps, 4:2:2 Infrared mode and 3D Shooting Assist functions
The XF100 utilizes Canon's XF Codec – a file-based MPEG-2 compression with an MXF File Wrapper that ensures the widest compatibility with existing industry infrastructure, metadata and non-linear editing (NLE) systems. The codec's 4:2:2 color sampling provides ultra-fine transitions in tone and color for maintaining the highest image quality needed for advanced post production processing.
The point here, Many users find it a painful experience and they often met problems when importing Canon XF100 movies to Premiere Pro CS5 or Premiere Pro CS6. There are some frequently asked questions quoted as below:
"I thought the original file (from Canon XF100) be okay for Premiere Pro, but i get messages about unknown compression format. Please inform me about the compatible format i must use for editing in Premiere Pro CS6.”
"Hey, I recently got a Canon XF 100 and Ive been import the footage by copying the .mxf files from the card to my hard drive then imoprt it to PP. Just wondering if any one has a better workflow?"
There are two ways to import Canon XF100 recordings to Premiere Pro CS5/CS6/CS5.5. Both the following workflow will do the trick:
Method A: Using Canon XF Ultility
Canon provides a piece of software called the Canon XF utility, which is used to playback and download clips off their original media. It also has the ability to view clip metadata, mark timecode, and even apply a LUT to Canon Log footage for viewing. The XF Utility is available for download here on Canon’s site. You can use the Canon XF Utility to create a single MXF file of your spanned clips on the memory card and import the new file into the project.
Tip: Before downloading, please enter your product serial number with no hyphens “-”.
- Supports native MXF importing
- Doesn't work well wtih 50Mbps (CBR) 4:2:2, 1920×1080, (60i/30p/24p)
- With a lot of steps
- May cause errors due to incompatible codecs
- Spends a lot of time
- Occupies a large amount of RAM
- Only available for Canon MXF files
Part 1. Back up Canon XF100 MXF footages with XF Utility:
1. Connect your XF1OO camera to your Mac OS, you also can insert your CF card into your computer.
2. Launching the XF Utility, you will see your CF card showed up as the Canon drive and “Backup” in the upper left corner as the below picture.
3. Click Backup on the upper left corner, Canon XF100 MXF footages on the CF card will be backed up with the XF Utility.
PS: Before backing up videos, please make sure you have set the location to store your footage in the Preferences menu.
Part 1. Import Canon X100 projects to Premiere Pro
To bring your Canon XF100 footage into Premiere Pro (Here I take Premiere Pro 5.5 as example), you don’t need any special software. Premiere supports a huge range of formats without any plugins. To start, launch Premiere and make a new project.
Select ‘New Project,’ and then choose your settings to get going.
Select from the Canon XF MPEG2 drop down menu, and choose the format in which you shot. I shot in 1080 24p. Click ‘OK,’ and Premiere will open up. To import clips visit the “Media Browser” window, which is normally found in the lower left corner of Premiere. Otherwise you can open it by going to Window -> Media Browser. In the Media Browser locate your clips:
Choose the folder with your XF100 footage into Premiere Pro and Media Browser will allow you to view your clips. Media Browser assembles any spanned clips as well. Bring the clips that you wan to import into your project by either dragging them into the project window, or choosing File -> Import from Media Browser. Premiere will look through the folder for anything it can bring in, but because it only reads the actual Canon MXF files you will get some errors. Now your clips are in Premiere and ready to edit, special thanks to Adobe for helping get this right.
Method B: With MXF Converter
MXF Converter for Mac($29)
- Fastly convert MXF to Premiere Pro
- Three types of outputs for Premiere
- It is also available for Sony and Panasonic MXF footages.

Step 1: Download, install and run the professional Mac XF100 MXF to Premiere Pro CC/CS6/CS5/CS4 Converter.
After connecting your Canon XF100 camcorder to Mac via USB, you can just drag and drop them to the program window. Or click “Add Video” to load mxf videos, otherwise you can “Add from folder” to load all the raw videos in .mxf format.
Note: Batch converting mode is supported, so you can add several files at a time.
Step 2: Click "Format" bar and then move your pointer Adobe Premiere/Sony Vegas --> MPEG-2(*.mpg) as target format. Besides, you can also choose WMV (VC-1) (*.wmv) if you want to get a relatively smaller output file.
Tip: In case the default settings do not fit your requirement, you can click "Settings" button and enter "Profile Settings" panel to adjust video size, bit rate, frame rate, sample rate and audio channels.
Step 3: Click Convert button to start transcoding MXF to MPEG-2 for Premiere Pro CS6 on Mac OS X.
Once the conversion completes, you can click "Open" to find the .MPG videos which can be directly imported to Premiere Pro. You've done. As you see, now you can import and edit Canon XF100 MXF files in Premiere Pro CS5/CS5.5/CS6 without ANY problem.
If you want to edit Canon XF1OO MXF media in Final Cut Pro, please choose the "Final Cut Pro > Apple ProRes 422 (*.mov)" as output; For iMovie or FCE 4, choose the "iMovie and Final Cut Express -> Apple InterMediate Codec (AIC) (*.mov)". For Avid MC, choose "Avid Media Composer > Avid DNxHD(*.mov)"
The first Method is a free work for all Canon users and it can make Premiere Pro edit the native MXF videos. If you think it is a tiring work or your computer doesn't support pulgins well, I believe the second way can easily solve the incompatible troubles. In a word, the post about how to importing Canon XF100 MXF to Premiere Pro can give you a big help.

The Sony Handycam DCR-SR series camcorder capture standard definition video with MPEG-2 compression codec on hard disk driver. Most of output formats of DCR-SR series are DV video.
